An Iqama is the residence permit that lets a foreign national live and work in Saudi Arabia. It is issued by Jawazat, tied to one sponsor or employer, and must be renewed before its expiry date to avoid fines.

What an Iqama is

The word Iqama means residence in Arabic. In Saudi Arabia it is the permit, and the card or digital record that goes with it, that proves a non-Saudi is legally resident. It is separate from your entry visa and from your passport.

Your Iqama has a ten-digit number that is used to log in to Absher, to be linked to your employer in Muqeem and Qiwa, and to pay fees. See your Iqama number for what it looks like and where to find it.

Questions

Is an Iqama the same as a visa?

No. A visa lets you enter Saudi Arabia. An Iqama is the residence permit you receive after entering on a work or family visa, and it is what lets you live in the Kingdom.

Who issues the Iqama?

Jawazat, the General Directorate of Passports under the Ministry of Interior, issues and renews it. Most people manage it through Absher or, for employers, Muqeem.

Do I need to carry my Iqama?

You should be able to show proof of residency when asked. Absher can show a digital copy of your Iqama details; check the current Absher guidance on what is accepted.

Do dependents get their own Iqama?

Yes. Family members sponsored by a resident each have their own Iqama, and a dependent fee applies. See the dependent fee page.
